HOW CAN YOU ACTIVATE THE GROWTH OF COILY AND KINKY HAIR?
curly hair

To help Afro-textured hair grow, you need to start with a good base…

You don’t need a magnifying glass to see that hair is “planted” into the scalp, it is one with the scalp.
So, the scalp must be in good shape; it is THE starting point for good growth and to feed the 100,000 to 200,000 hairs that we all have, we need vitality!
In fact, you can give the hair a little massage for 5 to 10 minutes a day: this will activate blood circulation and a scalp with a better blood supply means better hair growth.

Now, we will look at two essential points, softness and vitamins which ensure good hair health:
1/ SURROUND THE HAIR WITH SOFTNESS
Your afro-textured hair likes softness, pamper it with a protective hairstyle, that is to say a hairstyle that protects its ends and lengths.
You have the choice of 2 types that you can adopt one after the other:
- fully protective styles such as crochet braids, wigs or weaves.
- low-handling protective styles, which are classified into 2 categories:
. “Braid-outs”, “twist-outs” and “flat twist-outs”, “bantu knot outs” to not worry too much about your hair
and
. Braids like twists or buns.

Once protected, your hair will grow more confidently and keep its length.
We will come back to these different techniques in a future article.

2/ GIVE YOUR HAIR VITAMINS
Your hair loves softness as you just read, but it also needs to be stimulated! You have to spoil it with vitamins and minerals, give it proteins and complex carbohydrates, but it’s that not complicated, just follow the guide!
You can rely on food supplements but also simply rely on … your plate.
Choosing the right foods is often enough to provide everything even the most tired manes need.

So, what are the best vitamins for good hair growth?
Where can you find them?

Here’s a little summary to help you:

VITAMIN A/A group vitamins
Vitamin A is found in two forms in nature:
- The active form of vitamin A (or retinol)
- Beta-carotene or provitamin A, precursor of vitamin A
Vitamin A neutralizes free radicals. It is an antioxidant that blocks the enemies of hair growth. It is easily found in food because many animal products contain it: dairy products, fatty fish, egg yolk.
For provitamin A, go for carrots, sweet potatoes, spinach and lamb’s lettuce. And if you like fruit, treat yourself, you’ll be treating your hair, too! To munch on, put in smoothies or in salads … there’s nothing like fruit for hair growth: mango, melon or apricots for example are afro-textured hair’s best friends.

BIOTINE (or vitamin B8)
Biotin tones and revitalizes the hair; it supports hair growth by strengthening the scalp and the hair fiber. Conversely, a biotin deficiency often means a weakened scalp and therefore brittle hair.
Where can you find biotin? Royal jelly and brewer’s yeast contain biotin in large quantities, but most legumes (lentils, beans, soybeans), vegetables (tomatoes, lettuce, carrots, corn), nuts and seeds also contain it.
Let’s not forget dairy products, which are always good friends to hair if you are not lactose intolerant.

B GROUP VITAMINS
Hair fibers love cocktails (not mojitos! ;)) But vitamin cocktails. Among afro-textured hair’s favorite ingredients are the vitamins of the B group: B2, B3 and especially B5 and B6, an essential pillar of their growth AND their strength. These vitamins renew the cells of the hair follicle (the cavity in which the hair takes root).

Vitamin B2 is found in high doses in brewer’s yeast and wheat germ, which you can sprinkle on your salads, but it is also hidden in soybeans, organ meats, grains, skim milk or cottage cheese, lettuce, hazelnuts, most fish and eggs.
Fill up on vitamin B3 with salmon, tuna and most fish, as well as white meats and grains.
Several food groups contain vitamin B5, including grains, wheat germ, organ meats, raw egg yolk and fruits, lentils, mainly nuts such as peanuts, walnuts or hazelnuts.
As for vitamin B6, look for foods rich in vitamin B5 as they often contain both. You can add bananas, prunes, sesame and sunflower seeds as well as mushrooms, potatoes and chickpeas to that list.
It is an important vitamin and if you lack it, the production of sebum is unbalanced and leads to scalp flaking and dandruff proliferation.
Add a few foods rich in vitamin C, E and omega 3s to this group of B vitamins and you’ll have a truly magnificent mane!

Where can you find the “C’s”? Go green! Spinach, broccoli and kiwis are your friends.

“E” is hidden in avocados, mangoes, soybeans, corn, olive or sunflower oils, salmon, sweet potatoes, tomatoes or watercress.

Let’s not forget the omega 3s, powerful antioxidants, they ensure good scalp health and revitalize the hair.
