Co-wash: the alternative to shampoo

But what is a co-wash?

What is a co-wash?

Co-Wash, which is the contraction of "conditioner" and "washing", means washing your hair with a soap-free cleanser.

Have you ever heard of the Co-Wash? The Co-Wash is an alternative solution to shampoos. The term "co-wash" was first used by the English hairdresser Lorraine Massey. Based in NY, she is the inventor of the no-poo technique, which consists of only using conditioner to wash your hair. Having coily and curly hair herself, she specializes in the care of this type of hair.

For curls dried out by the sea, pool water or just dry by nature, co-wash is THE solution to bring your hair back to life.

It is well known that repeated shampoos can very often dry out your hair fiber and unbalance the scalp. In order to give your curls a fresh and voluptuous look, we recommend you add a Co-Wash to your routine. This technique allows you to give your hair a boost without necessarily going through the obligatory shampooing process.

What are the benefits of co-wash for your hair?

Because of its richer texture and its hydrating and nourishing properties, co-wash makes styling easier and preserves hydration for your coily, curly and kinky hair.

Here are the benefits of co-wash for your hair:
  • Maintains defined curls without a mattifying effect
  • Allows your hair to rediscover hydrated, silky, soft and shiny curls
  • Helps to space out shampoos
  • Helps remove excess impurities accumulated in the hair (sweat, pollution, salt, etc.)
  • Helps rehydrate the hair fiber
  • Reduces frizz
  • Easier Styling
In short, a co-wash is the ideal solution for your hair.

How do you use a co-wash?

The co-wash is used in the same way as a shampoo. We recommend that you apply your co-wash to damp hair, taking only a small amount of the product.

  1. Spread your product on your scalp and massage gently with your fingers.
  2. Apply another dab of your co-wash to the nape of the neck, the area most prone to knots.
  3. Rinse with clear water and detangle with your fingers to avoid damaging the hair.

When it comes to frequency, as hair styling experts at Kairly Paris, we can propose different techniques.

  • Use your co-wash as an alternative to shampoos, throughout the year in a balanced way, alternating with your shampoo.
  • Use a co-wash as a detox for a few months. This detox will help hydrate your hair. Your hair will also regain flexibility and lightness. Once your detox is complete, you can resume a routine that includes shampoo, an oil bath and a mask.
Who can use a co-wash?

We recommend this product for all hair types: kinky, curly, coily, afro, straight or straightened. However, we do not recommend using this product for people with low porosity hair.
