How to reduce volume and frizz in coily and kinky hair

Before we get into the solutions, let's try to understand why hair swells together.

How to reduce volume and frizz in coily and kinky hair

And there are days when it really "swells"!

Coily hair, instead of falling right against the scalp like straight hair, moves away from it with its naturally kinky shape. Some hair types are soft enough that they don't pose any maintenance or styling problems, but there are several levels of coiliness that go all the way up to very kinky hair, which is obviously more difficult to maintain.
When coily hair is very dry, the scales that surround the hair fiber, also called cuticles, are spread out, bristling, in short, they stick and styling becomes an obstacle course.

When the cuticle is damaged, the scales pull away from the hair fiber and hair often reaches unmanageable proportions. Dehydrated hair has a porous cuticle whose scales are open, which is what makes the hair frizzy and dull in humidity.

To optimize the action of your shampoo, avoid water that is too hot, which, unlike cold water, dissolves sebum. There is no need to plunge your head into a bucket of ice water, but lukewarm water is just right for shampooing.

Let's not forget that the neutral PH of water is 7, which is higher than that of the hair, which is 5. In short, this means that the water opens the hair scales.

Are you following me? Open scales = weakened hair shaft, increased porosity, damaged hair, increased volume, swollen hair.

Here we are, your curls are coiled but not how you would like them to be. Your curls become rebellious, hook onto each other and break. They fight against your comb and styling turns into a nightmare. "Pre-detangling" with your fingers is recommended.

After shampooing, apply a conditioner adapted to curly and kinky hair to your coily hair (on the lengths only), choose a quality product that will hydrate and nourish your hair. You can repeat this several times a week as it will make styling easier. We suggest two of them:

Ideally, start doing the conditioner/mask routine as well. You can only benefit from it. It is important to adapt your hair care and the frequency of use to the nature of your hair, more or less dry, more or less fine. But once you find the right allies, your routine will become easy.
